The season of Lent is a period of six weeks when we remember Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness, from which he emerged with a clear sense of identity and mission. Lent is a time to stay close to Jesus as we deepen our life of communion with God. We look for opportunities for silence as we slow our frenzied lives and turn to calm and stillness.
February 26 is the First Sunday in Lent. In worship, the color changes to purple, and we bring in the cross instead of the Christ candle. We also use the candles of the Advent wreath, gradually extinguishing the light. We refrain from singing our alleluias and reserve that praise for Easter Day.
Holy Week concludes the season, starting with Palm/Passion Sunday on April 1, and moving to Maundy Thursday when we gather at 6:30 p.m. for communion. The solemn service of Tenebrae is on Friday at 7:30 p.m., when we remember the crucifixion by leaving the sanctuary in darkness and silence. Sunday, April 8, at 11 a.m. we celebrate the joy of the Resurrection.
Lenten devotional resources written by Henri Nouwen are available in the foyers.
